Snowbirdย was fun today. Fortunately it has stayed cold since the last storm, and although the vast majority of the mountain has seen a lot of skier traffic since then, the snow has remained soft. We found some nice windblown areas, and withย a little scouting, we were even able to find some pockets of untracked. Somewhat expected, getting into some of the Cirque chutes was a little rocky, especially along the traverse, but the chutes themselves were holding some good chalky snow. The trees were skiing great, along the the bumps and groomers.
With all of their lifts and their terrain open, and 6-18″ currently forecast from Thursday through Friday evening, the mountain is set up for some great skiing. I am from Lake Tahoe, but took the California Zephyr train (which turned out to be an enjoyable alternative to driving or flying!) out to Salt Lake to visit friends and ski the Wasatch. While we have certainly had a great season in Tahoe so far, the change of scenery was well worth the trip, and the Bird did not disappoint.
