Report fromย March 25, 2024
Arriving after multiple powder alerts to Snowbird, Utah, had us out of the car nice and early. Light traffic to the base of the Gad Valley had us in the lot before 8:15 a.m. We spent most of our day in that valley with a couple of trips around the Cirque and a quick moment at Peruvian.
Early in the day, we talked to a patroller on the way up Little Cloud. We asked about the avalanche mitigation strategies on the western part of the resort. He told us that on a low-key storm day, the Road to Provo and related terrain requires approximately 16 charges, air cannon blasts, and three different pitches of ski cutting. Then patrol opens the gate to allow traffic on the Road.
Throughout the day, the weather oscillated between intense flurries and bouts of radiant sunshine. The switches in weather kept the snow cold and riders grateful for both conditions.
Lawson, the lift operations lead for Gad 2, treated us to two laps of his favorite lines. And, wow, that guy can shred! We tried to take some footage, but he never really waited enough for a good follow cam. We like that in a rider.
By the end of the day, the lower snow felt a bit heavier than it did at the start, but overnight flurries should help it stay nice and soft. With more to come, Snowbird is not conceding to spring.
