A solid winter storm is sweeping across the Northern Rockies, delivering fresh snowfall to many mountainous areas on Thursday and Thursday night. This system will gradually wind down by Friday, with high pressure bringing a brief lull through the weekend. Early next week, another wave of snowfall arrives, favoring Idaho, western Montana, and northwest Wyoming. By midweek, an unsettled pattern may bring additional moderate snow, setting the stage for a potentially stronger storm late in the period.

A strong Thursdayโ€“Friday storm is impacting western and central Wyoming, southwest Montana, and central/southern Idaho with widespread snowfall. Higher peaks in Wyoming are picking up healthy totals, with snow levels initially sitting near 3,500โ€“4,000 feet in Idaho. Storm totals are highest in the Teton Range, where snow ratios are in the 12โ€“15:1 range, so expect fairly fluffy conditions. By Friday midday, this snowfall will taper off across all areas, though lingering light showers may still pop up through the afternoon with minimal additional accumulations.

Saturday and Sunday bring drier and slightly warmer conditions, offering a short break for most of the Northern Rockies. Temperatures will rise modestly, though still remain cold enough at higher elevations to preserve recent snow. Some breezy afternoon winds could develop in exposed ridges, but no significant precipitation is expected until later Sunday. Far northern zones may see a few snow showers on Sunday afternoon, but accumulations should remain quite light.

By Monday night into Wednesday, a new disturbance sweeps in, reintroducing widespread snow to Idaho, western Montana, and parts of northwest Wyoming. Snow ratios will hover in the 9โ€“12:1 range for many areas, translating to decent to good-quality snowโ€”though not as light as the current system. The activity will generally focus on higher elevations, but valley floors may see an occasional rain/snow mix. Looking further ahead, the latter half of next week may feature a more robust winter storm, especially in Wyoming, with the broader long-range outlook pointing to continued active weather and cooler-than-normal conditions expanding eastward from the Rockies.
