As winter starts to fade in North America, Breckenridge Ski Resort, Colorado, is gearing up for one of the best times of the season: spring skiing. While many shift their focus to beach vacations and outdoor summer sports, Breckenridge’s high elevation and deep snowpack often provide prime conditions well into May, with the added bonus of fewer crowds and better deals. Late-season storms frequently deliver fresh powder, and the resort keeps the energy high with free live music, pond-skimming competitions, and a more laid-back, local atmosphere. With operations scheduled through Sunday, May 11, Breckenridge is proving once again that spring skiing is more than just an afterthought—it’s a season of its own.

NEW Peaks & Beats – April 26-27, 2025

Springtime is all about good times and the high alpine at Breck, and the resort is bringing it all together with its new spring bash, Peaks & Beats. Double down on all your favorite spring staples – high alpine laps, live music and DJs, and the annual tradition of pond skimming, with a new two-day format for two times the big Breck energy. Breck will offer not one but two days of free concerts and two days of pond skimming. Send it into spring in style at Peaks & Beats when it all goes down this spring at the center of the universe, the base of Peak 8. After the first day of pond skimming on Saturday, Dombresky will take the stage for a free live DJ set followed by Cassian throwing it down after the second pond skim sesh on Sunday. Costumes are not required but are strongly encouraged, so break out your brightest neon or your most water-resistant denim and head to Breck for all the fun this spring. Details on pond skim registration will become avaialable in April.

Breck’s Imperial Challenge – April 5, 2025

The Imperial Challenge is a unique, wild, and fun pseudo-triathlon, test of athleticism, rite of spring, and all around community party where local folks and uphill enthusiasts alike gather in Breck to race to the top of Peak 8 at 13,000 feet above-sea-level. Participants start in town at 9,600 feet above sea-level and race to the base of Peak 7 at Breckenridge Ski Resort on foot or on bicycle, then transition over to uphill skis or splitboards and skins to make their way uphill to the top of Peak 8 before racing back down again. This route is no easy feat with nearly 4,000 feet of elevation gain and approximately 10 miles of human-powered travel. This year’s event takes place on Saturday, April 5, 2025. Spandex, tutus and costumes are always encouraged! For more information and to register, visit RaceBreck.com.

Springtime is for the High Alpine!

Spring is one of the best times of the year at Breck for skiing and riding, and there are plenty of chances to get your spring turns in with the resort regularly scheduled to operate into mid-May. Thanks to a base elevation of 9,600 feet above sea-level, including the highest chairlift in North America – the Imperial SuperChair – and the good work of snow god Ullr, Breck often boasts spectacular spring snow conditions, and offers one of the longest-running ski seasons of any major resort in the country. Beginning in late April, intermediate-, advanced- and expert-level skiers and riders can celebrate spring and get on snow long after many resorts have closed for the season, with access to signature high alpine terrain across Peaks 6, 7 and 8. Warmer weather, long sunny days, goggle tans and the occasional spring powder day – what’s not to love?! Heads up! There is no beginner terrain available during late spring operations (starting mid-to-late April) and all skiing and riding is intermediate-and-above level terrain.

Sunny with a chance of… everything!

Mother Nature can really switch things up in spring. One day it might be warm and sunny, t-shirt-on-the-snow weather, and another day there might be a foot of snow. It’s also entirely possible you might get a little taste of all the weather in the span of one single day. Make sure to check the forecast ahead of time to help you plan for your day on the snow, and know that weather and conditions can also change quickly in the mountains, and especially so in springtime. That said, spring often brings a generous helping of sunshine and blue skies.

Spring it on, Later

Spring is the no fuss, no hurry, go-at-your-own-pace time of year, and snow conditions are often best if you give them a little time to soften up first. While everyone loves the warm, sunny weather that spring typically brings, it can also bring “freeze/thaw” patterns. During the day, the sun softens the snow providing those oh-so-good spring turns we all love, but at night when the temperatures drop back below freezing, the snow surface hardens again. So go ahead, give yourself permission to sleep in. Grab breakfast in town. Then hit the snow once the sun has worked its magic.
