Stawamus Chief towers over Squamish, BC.

RCMP in Squamish, BC say a local man has died after falling during a climb on the north face of the Stawamus Chief Mountain, the second climber to die on the mountain in six weeks.

Police say they were contacted Sunday at 11:30 am by a climber on the Stawamus Chief who told them they had seen the lead climber of a group fall while scaling the Angelโ€™s Crest portion of mountain.

They say RCMP officers, along with Search and Rescue and a medical team located the climber 650 to 1,000-feet up the face.

Sergeant Sascha Banks said in a release Sunday night that after โ€œa difficult and highly technical extraction the man, a 33-year-old Squamish resident, went into medical distress and died a short time later.โ€

The manโ€™s name was not immediately released, and police said the investigation into the death had been handed over to the BC Coronerโ€™s Service.

Police noted in their release that this is the second climber to die on the Stawamus Chief in the past six weeks and that Squamish RCMP along with itโ€™s partners will be working hard to get the โ€œsafe adventuringโ€ messaging out to the affected community.
