It’s that time of year when Squaw’s impressive fleet of chairs begins to diminish at a rapid pace, with the lower mountain lifts dropping like flies. While the skiing is still holding up decently well, the rate of snow loss is rather alarming. Red Dog and Squaw Creek are done for the year, and KT will be soon to follow. That being said, today brought a bit of everything, from rain to snow, mist to sunshine.
Highlights:
- Granite Groomer
- A remarkably smooth Classic Chute
- Headwall face (and pretty much everything else off Headwall)
- Race Crew having to set up V-Netting in the mud for the masters race on Exi
Despite the astounding melt-off that’s been happening on the hill, the skiing is still fun, fast and springlike. While first in the morning things are a bit setup (assuming we dip into freezing temperatures), by 10 o’clock or so the skiing has softened up and is ready to rip. With most of the mountain smooth it is high corn farmin’ season (save the occasional misting we were experiencing throughout the day).
There is a chance for some winter like precipitation for Tahoe tomorrow, so hang tight. There is still a whisper of hope to ski some smooth pow one last time at Squaw.
I talked to a ski patrol guy on KT this morning and he said they were planning to shut down headwall after this weekend and keep KT running for next weekend (he was also of the opinion that headwall may not even open tomorrow – sunday – given the weather forecast)
I hope this is true. 1 more week of KT would be huge.
FWIW the “host” with ipad thing that checks your photo at the lift entrance this morning also said it’d be open next weekend… but they’re going to have to push some snow around to make it happen unless we get something tomorrow/monday.
That’s what I heard from a patroller as well.
Just you wait, there’s an April dump lurking out there…
Onto bike season!
