Sugar Bowl Resort, at Norden, California, and Elsa McAllister, Sugar Bowl Academy Freerider, are launching a grand event called “Open to Shred” on March 16, 2024. Open to Shred is a celebration of skiing, honoring diversity, inclusivity, and community on the slopes of Sugar Bowl Resort. Want to feel part of something special? This is your chance. Never skied before? Open To Shred is your time to learn!
Elsa McAllister is a 17-year-old Freerider who identifies as Queer. She has found the ski community predominantly cis-gender and White, and as such has felt at times excluded and alienated. Open to Shred was her idea to bring more diversity to the mountains and to ensure everyone feels safe and welcome. Together with Bridget Legnavsky, CEO of Sugar Bowl, the idea for Open to Shred has become reality and the resort looks forward to welcoming everyone to the resort, “We aim to make skiing less intimidating and more accessible for all.”
Elan Skis, Rab Outerwear, and Sugarbowl Ski Resort are sponsors for this event. These fantastic sponsors will provide swag and demos. Don’t miss the Ski and Ride terrain park clinic; it is FREE and will be coached by world-renowned ski and snowboard coaches. If you are a beginner, you must bring warm ski clothing – but boots, poles, skis, snowboard, and helmets can be provided with rentals.
So come and find your inner shredder and bring your friends and family to experience the joy of skiing. As part of the events, lift tickets for the day will be $99, and for those who require gear, there is a $99 beginner ski package, which includes lessons, rentals, and a lift ticket. There will be food, drinks, a DJ, and live music at Judah Lodge. Ski, dance, make new friends flip, fall, do your worst, do your best.
