December hasn’t really delivered the goods here in Austria but at higher elevations above 2400m there is a decent base and good snow conditions to be found. This doesnโt leave many options so we headed back to Obergurgl in the รtztal one of our favorite spots to ride easy access backcountry. The terrain is gnarly and there is a ton of options available with short hikes.
Thursday during the day and evening there was significant precipitation in most of western Austria. Due to the high temperatures it rained up to 2400m. Above that it snowed about a good 10cms. Also there was quit a bit of wind loaded snow transported by moderate to strong westerly winds. At lower elevations the snow had a bit of rain crust but was still very rideable and fun.
Friday morning it was 100% bluebird. We were super stoked to shred some fresh untracked pow and weren’t disappointed. The shaded aspects of the mountain held light, dry snow that was just waiting to get ripped. By early afternoon the wind picked up and it started to cloud over a bit but that didn’t stop us to ride until the lifts closed.
Another super fun day riding with friends at Obergurgl with great blower pow.
