**Updated** NOAA’s 2014/15 Winter Weather Outlook for the USA:

NOAA just released their updated 2014/15 Winter Weather Outlook for the USA. One cool new thing is that this time they gave us “percentage chances”. This means that in the pie charts in the graphs, we can see what the chances are that what they are forecasting may happen. The graphs are great and the write is extremely wordy. What they’re trying to say in the write up is this: 2014/15 NOAA Winter Weather Outlook Breakdown: – South Alaska and the Southern US have 43% chance of having above average precipitation this winter. This […]

NOAA 2014/15 Winter Outlook for USA: Dec, Jan, Feb

NOAA's winter outlook for December, January, and February is showing above average precipitation in all the southern USA. Below average precipitation is predicted for the Pacific Northwest and Ohio River Basin.

NOAA’s outlook models are updated each month and this latest update was done on September 18th, 2014. Despite the lowered chances of an El Nino this winter, NOAA won’t let go of the El Nino pattern just yet. In NOAA’s latest El Nino update, they stated: The chance of El Niรฑo is at 60-65% during the Northern Hemisphere fall and winter. – NOAA on September 22nd, 2014 This chance of El Nino is causing NOAA to show above average precipitation in the south this coming December, January, and February in the USA. So, if this pattern is somewhat accurate, who is in the bullseye? […]

2014/15 Winter Outlook by PowderChasers

winter 2014/15

There have only been a total of 20 El Nino events since 1950. El Nino generally refers to warming of the waters along the Equatorial Pacific. This year had a distinct warming of the ocean waters in the Spring, and a slight decrease in Mid-Summer. The late summer/early fall data showed a warming trend with higher confidence of an El Nino winter. The big question is the strength? My best analysis is a weak El Nino during the early winter months with a general decrease from Mid Winter to Spring 2015. The monsoon moisture has been bringing record rains to Arizona, New Mexico and other areas that have seen a multi year drought. We had epic […]
