California’s Dec. Snowfall Not Enough to Combat Drought Despite heavy precipitation in the first two weeks of December, California is in need of even more rain and snow to tackle its crippling four-year drought. In a report released by the Department of Water Resources, officials state that while there is more snow in the Sierras than last year at this time, the snow water equivalent statewide remains far below average for this date. The DWR conducted the survey near Echo Summit, about 90 miles east of Sacramento. According to DWR’s Frank Gehrke, chief of the California Cooperative Snow […] Weather ameliatraynor | January 15, 2015 2 Comments
NOAA Satellite Imagery: California = The Golden-BROWN State… The historic California drought is now 3 years old and the numbers are starting to add up. It’s not looking good for California. โEleven of the past fifteen years have been drier than normal, with the past three years delivering about 45 percent of normal rain and snowpack in Southern California. This follows two of the wettest decades in Californiaโs historyโthe 1980s and 1990s […] Weather SnowBrains | July 24, 2014 0 Comments
California Drought Predicted 10 Years Ago California is currently in the middle of the worst drought in the past 165 years. University of California professor Lisa Sloan used computer models to predict the current drought conditions in 2004. Sloan’s models were general, and predicted the specific conditions driving the current California drought. The model showed that a decrease in arctic sea ice would lead to atmospheric blocking off the coast of California. This modeled atmospheric blocking comes in the form of a high pressure zone. This year that is exactly what was observed. With a decrease in Arctic sea ice, the heat transfer from the ocean to the atmosphere increases […] Weather SnowBrains | March 22, 2014 2 Comments

“The End of Snow?” | by The New York Times The planet has warmed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit since the 1800s, and as a result, snow is melting. In the last 47 years, a million square miles of spring snow cover has disappeared from the Northern Hemisphere. Europe has lost half of its Alpine glacial ice since the 1850s, and if climate change is not reined in, two-thirds of European ski resorts will be likely to close by 2100. Descending During the NorCal Drought @ Kirkwood – 01/18/14 Wow what a year eh? Not much has changed since my last update but the bottom line is that there is definitely some fun to be had in the Sierra Nevada Range. On January 11th, it actually snowed. Yes, those 4 inches made things steep and…well…a bit better than expected. Arrival at Kirkwood blessed us with a glimpse of winter. With temperatures in the 30s, a cool breeze, snow on the trees and crisp blue skies, it was shaping up to be a great late November, er January day. Given the lack of gnar on the slopes, I have been taking this opportunity to get my kids on the slopes. Parker, age 2, is pretty enthusiastic about wearing the gear, riding […] Conditions Report Casey Cane | January 24, 2014 5 Comments
NASA: California Drought Getting Worse… | Powerful Comparison Images of 2013 vs. 2014 The California drought is getting worse. It’s so bad, that NOAA just wrote an essay about just how bad the CA drought is and created these images for us to understand just what they’re talking about. 2013 was a dry year for California, but it has nothing on 2014 so far. January is on track to be Californiaโs […] Weather SnowBrains | January 23, 2014 2 Comments
