Red Flag Fire Warning for California Right Now… This isn’t a great sign. Our winter is going backwards. Right now, there is a Red Flag Fire Warning for California from 8am Thursday until 9am Friday. This is the kind of situation that we generally only see in Summer and Fall when things are bone dry and the winds are offshore. Yet, that’s exactly what we’re experiencing in mid-January. Lame. On the bright side, this has been the best Fall/Winter of surf in NorCal in recent memory. Swell is up, winds are offshore, and tubes are plentiful.[…] SnowBrains | January 16, 2014 2 Comments
January Looks Bleak for Tahoe | Heat Wave Coming to CA… Above is a shot of a 180+ km Asian Jet coming across the Pacific for Tuesday January 21st. Notice how it doesn’t make it past 160W latitude as it weakens. This is effectively pressing the ridge right on top of us sending California into a heat wave! We are going to have an inversion set up above 6,500′ through Friday at least. Highs in the mid 50’s for the Sierra valleys and 40’s at the 10,000′ level (Highs will be up to 76F in Sacramento this week), with overnight lows remaining above freezing on the mountains. So much for the really good […] Weather WeatherBrains | January 15, 2014 0 Comments

Snow in Tahoe Before February? Please… This is a shot of Idiots at Alpine last January. We received a series of Sierra cement slab type storms followed by a week of blower pow during Christmas which made for a great start to our season last year. We had 50% of normal snowfall for the season by the end of December. Now here we are, we haven’t had a significant series of storms since December 2012. Here is a picture under the Siberia chair on January 6th 2014. […] Weather WeatherBrains | January 7, 2014 0 Comments
Why is the West Coast So Dry Right Now? Ok, it’s been long enough without snow on the West Coast of the USA. California in particular is really getting the shaft from the snow gods this year so far. We understand that it hasn’t snowed, but why? NOAA gives us a glimpse into why the West Coast is staying dry right now and they allow a glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel. This background image (above image) is a screenshot of water vapor satellite imagery. The warmer colors indicate dry air while the cooler blues to grey show areas of upper level moisture. Overlaid on the image are […] SnowBrains | January 2, 2014 4 Comments
