British Columbia Backcountry Report: Eating Sh$% Trying To Ski Invisible Pillows in Canada

Report from January 20, 2025 On Monday we couldn’t decide what to do. I’d gone backcountry skiing 15 of the past 19 days and was simply exhausted. We decided to go for the same pillows I’d skied on January 12. It took 4 hours to get to them and we had a few options and none of them looked right. […]

British Columbia Backcountry Report: 1,000-Vertical-Feet of Pillows, Fear, & Joy

Report from January 13, 2025 On Monday Dwanis and I battled out into the British Columbia backcountry. Things started flat and mellow, then quickly escalated into a full-blow BC bushwhack switchback into the steeps… Pillows and steeps. Pillows and steeps and logs. Pillows and steeps and logs and trees. It was rough going. 4 hours later, we poked out into […]

British Columbia, Canada Hut Trip Report – Day 6: Great Pillow Skiing, A Size 3 Avalanche, & a Special Public Avalanche Warning

Report from December 28, 2022 Pillow hunting only yesterday. This was day #6 of our BC hut trip. I was tired. I only skied 2 laps and headed home. On the first lap, I found 2 sets of pillows that I’d never seen before and decided to go for it. They both worked out pretty great and I was stoked! […]

British Columbia, Canada Hut Trip Report – Day 5: One Long Powder Run & Some Bigger Pillow Play

Report from December 27, 2022 On the 5th day of our BC hut trip, we had good snow and tough visibility. It was snowing lightly and relatively warm for this region. We started off heading up the ridge into avalanche terrain. Avalanche danger has been an issue on this trip so we took it slow. Ski cuts and tests didn’t […]

British Columbia, Canada Hut Trip Report – Day 4: High Avalanche Danger = Deep Snow = Crazy Fun Mini-Pillows

Report from December 26, 2022 High avalanche danger + deep snow yesterday = big fun in the mini-pillow zone on day #4 of our BC hut trip. High avy danger kept us confined to safer, non-connected zones yesterday and that was just fine by us. We gang-mobbed these fun little pillows and had more than just a few laughs out […]

VIDEO: What It Looks Like to Ski a Spine Pillow in Japan

One of the magical aspects of japan is that some of the spines here grow pillows. They’re difficult to figure out to ride and I still haven’t perfectly greased one of these spicier ones yet, but it’s insanely fun figuring them out. They change hugely from year to year. This year, the upper pillows are three times bigger than they were last year. I cut the first two pillows out of the video as they have no flow. Just two 10 to 15-foot acid drops to uphill landings. Still damn fun, though. […]
