It has been a strange start to winter in the Northeast this year. In just the last few days we have gone from beach weather to morning temperatures below freezing. This sudden drop in temperatures has also coincided with a moderate (4-6″) snowstorm in Northern New England. The upshot of this is that Ski Areas are finally starting to blow snow and get their lifts spinning. Here is the list of resorts that will open in the next week.

Sunday River, ME

Opening day: Thursday 11/17/2022

Although Killington was scheduled to open first, Sunday River made a last-minute announcement that they will be opening on Thursday at 9 am, for Passholders only on day one. Killington did not open until noon, which makes Sunday River the first resort open in New England this season. Two trails are open off of the Locke Mountain triple chairlift, with all skiers being required to get on the lift at the mid-station every run and ride down the lift to the base at the end of the day.

Killington also opened for Passholders only on Thursday. Two intermediate trails will be available on opening day off of the North Ridge Quad. All skiers and riders will be required to ride down the K1 Gondola at the end of the day, no skiing is available to the base area.

Sugarloaf, ME

Opening day: Friday 11/18/2022

Sugarloaf opens Saturday with an impressive 1,750 vertical feet of skiing on five trails off of the Superquad. They received seven inches of snow since Tuesday night, which has probably contributed to this large-scale opening.

Stowe, VT

Opening day: Saturday 11/19/2022

Stowe is opening top to bottom on Saturday, with several trails and over 2,000 vertical feet of skiing on the FourRunner Quad. Like Sugarloaf, Stowe did well in the last storm, which is likely a large part of why they are able to open such an impressive offering on Saturday.
