Heli-skiing is a bucket list experience for many avid skiers and snowboarders that offers an unparalleled adventure for thrill-seekers. It combines the exhilaration of untouched powder with the breathtaking beauty of remote mountain terrain. With a helicopter as your lift, the possibilities are endless, taking you to peaks and slopes that few have ever skied before.
British Columbia is the world capital of heli-skiing, with the most extensive and diverse heli-skiing terrain globally. The province has numerous heli-skiing operators and offers many experiences, from the rugged Coast Mountains to the interior ranges like the Purcells, Selkirks, and Monashees.
In the U.S., heli-skiing in Alaska is considered one of the most thrilling and iconic experiences in the world of extreme skiing and snowboarding. The state’s vast, rugged terrain and its deep, consistent snowfall make it a premier destination for heli-skiing enthusiasts. Other western states like Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, and Washington all have heli operators.
But is there anywhere to heli-ski on the East Coast? It turns out there is.
Chic-Chac, located near Murdochville, Quebec, on the cusp of the Atlantic Ocean on the rugged and scenic Gaspรฉ Peninsula, claims to have the best skiing anywhere on the East Coast. Located in the Chic Choc Mountain Range with an average yearly snowfall of nearly 23 feet, the operation offers a variety of snow activities, including guided alpine touring, cat skiing, and heli skiing.
Many skiers haven’t heard of this place, but the overall area boasts over 60,000 acres dominated by long, above-tree line slopes offering up to 1,200-foot vertical runs on top of 3,000-4,000-foot peaks. The heliskiing terrain is done on Mont York and Mont Porphyre, with an elevation of 2,600-2,800 feet and vertical drops of 1,000-1,100 feet. Open powder fields as well and below-tree line runs are plenty. Guests can choose from various packages for their skiing experience, from half, single, or multiple days to custom packages that include heli, cat, touring, and even resort skiing at the local ski hill, Mont Miller, which is also owned by Chic-Chac.
Having such an operation drivable from the New England area is favorable as it gives East Coasters an option to experience heli-skiing without boarding a plane. The most direct route from Boston takes about 12 hours. For those who want to fly, Michel-Pouliot Gaspรฉ Airport (YGP) is nearby.
The distinctive landscapes, deep snow, and the camaraderie at the hostel lodging give Chic-Chac a vibe like no other. If you make it your next ski trip, youโll consume memories of untouched powder, stunning mountain views, and the thrill of exploring Quebecโs remote Gaspรฉ Peninsula from the sky. The unique blend of adventure, local culture, and personalized service ensures that every visitor feels like theyโve discovered a hidden gem. Whether youโre an experienced heli-skier or new to the sport, a trip to Chic-Chac offers an unforgettable experience that will have you yearning to return to these wild, beautiful mountains again and again.
“Having such an operation drivable from the New England area is favorable”.. Really? It’s 10+ hrs from Boston to Moncton, NB Canada, and then at least another 6-8 hrs. to Murdochville. That’s with clear, dry snow free roads, which is unlikely in winter this far north. I’ve been watching Chic Chac skiing for years, and I’m sure it’s good and likely best eastern snow. You’d be close to Colorado for the time invested, to still be in the east.
I’m not sure why you would go that way. The most direct route from Boston would be about 12 hours.

This is not what the heli ski operation services and in the context of the article is misleading.
