If there’s snow, we’ll ski it. A SnowBrains reader shared this video with us of him and his buddy skiing and boarding 500 vertical feet in California in September. What a way to transition from summer to fall!
“Snow skiing in California in late summer (September 1st, 2023) was mostly hiking with a little skiing at the top. Will, the Wolf Pack (Huskies), and I had to hike in about 3 miles and up to 10,000 feet to get to skiable snow. Started at the Blue Canyon Lake trailhead on California Hwy 108, and hiked to Blue Canyon Lake. Then hiked up the snow above the lake. We used micro spikes to traverse past the lake and then up “Suncup Gully” (ski line). The suncups were huge and resulted in challenging and interesting skiing & snowboarding. Fun adventure with amazing views, waterfalls, lots creek crossings, snow patches & bridges, and wild flowers. The weather that day did not feel like Summer. Cold & high winds, and we even got snowed on a little. A small cold storm was making its way over the Sierra Nevada, and the next day (September 2nd) probably dropped a couple of inches of snow at that location.”
