Snowboarder Jake Canter, 20, has been suspended by the U.S. National Team after being arrested on domestic abuse charges. The arrest happened last month during the Winter X Games held in Aspen, Colorado.
Canter had been competing in the Knuckle Huck on January 26, where he had a disappointing performance where he finished in last place (8th). Documents filed in Pitkin County district court allege that on his drive back to his condo in Snowmass Village he chastised a woman before throwing her phone against a wall and pinning her to a bed. He was arrested the next day by Snowmass Village police on domestic violence charges, including 3rd degree assault, criminal mischief, obstruction of telephone service, and harassment. All charges are Class 1 misdemeanor, except for the harassment, which is a Class 3 misdemeanor.
U.S. Ski & Snowboard has suspended Cantor from the team pending the outcome of the charges.
According to court documents, the woman audio recorded her conversation with Canter in the car where he can be heard screaming at her about her plans to go out with friends and threatening their relationship would be over if she did. Despite agreeing to not go out with friends, the argument continued at the condo where the woman retreated to a bedroom while telling Canter to get away from her. He followed her into the room anyway and she attempted to climb out a window. When she threatened to call the police, he threw the phone against the wall and pinned her to the bed by sitting on her legs and holding down her shoulders. Additionally, it was reported that the woman threw Cantor’s keys at him. Canter did admit to throwing the phone and told police he grabbed the woman on the bed and told her to calm down but released her after she told him a few times to let go.
This isn’t the first time Canter has faced adversity. In the winter of 2016, he suffered a traumatic head injury while trampolining that nearly ended his life. He didn’t return to snowboarding until August 2017 and despite now being deaf in his right ear as a result of the accident and the ensuing complications, Canter’s balance for snowboarding has remarkably been unaffected. As a junior competitor he took the top spot on the podium in the 2018 Junior Jam at the Burton U.S. Open.
Hopefully, he can turn around this recent debacle and make it back to the top of the slopestyle ranks.
