Valdez, AK, Report: What Is “Alaskan Velvet?” Hint: It’s This… And It’s Great…

Report from April 16, 2024

On Tuesday, we got out to have a look in a northern zone I’d never been to with Pulseline Adventure.

3 Pigs.

It was windy out there.

More than expected.

We skied 2 runs in good, wind-buffed powder in some high-quality ski terrain.

I wanted more, but the wind sent us back to our staging station.

We all took a break, regrouped, came up with a new plan, and flew out again.

We hit a zone we call Polly’s Prow and it was windless over ther.

The snow was perfect recrystallized powder (near surface facets) that we call “Alaskan Velvet.”

It always seems to feel about 4-8″ deep and every turn is the same leading to an increase in confidence with each turn.

Perfection is when you find Alaskan Velvet from top to bottom.

You can ski incredibly fast in this stuff and it generally doesn’t sluff too much.

Although you can see a decent-sized sluff coming off the cliffs in the run once I’m on the apron in the first video.

After 2 good runs on Polly’s Prow, we started towards home skiing “Split Decision” on our way out.

Split held perfect powder snow as well and we flew home smiley.

Thanks, Alaska!
