23 skiers and snowboarders had to be rescued on Saturday, January 20, 2024, after becoming lost in the backcountry at Killington, Vermont.
Around 2:30 p.m. the Killington Police Department was notified of 7-9 lost skiers and snowboardes in the backcountry. Upon speaking with the Search and Rescue Team at the Vermont State Police, Killington Police Officers established that in fact a total of 21 individuals were lost, including six children.
Killington Search and Rescue were mobilized which sent out a team of 12 rescue staff. The team members hiked, snowshoed, and skinned approximately 5 miles in single-digit temperatures to assist the lost skiers and boarders.
Once the skiers and snowboarders were located and their condition evaluated, Killington Search and Rescue helped them walk back to safety.ย Once out of the woods, those rescued warmed up in Killington Fire Departmentโs Heavy Rescue truck and rescue team membersโ personal vehicles as they awaited their rides.
