Above are a video and an image of avalanches triggered in Little Cottonwood Canyon by the Utah Department of Transportation from January 2nd, 2020. The avalanche in the video was a massive, mile-wide slide that buried a section of the Little Cottonwood highway 3-4 feet deep. An interlodge ordinance went into effect for the town of Alta following the slide.
Avalanches on these upper elevation, south facing slopes were breaking over wide areas and running out far. Thanks to the amazing coordination between the ski areas, UTDOT, UPD, and other groups and agencies, avalanche control work was carried out safely and no incidents occurred.
