In a narrow escape, Whistler snowboarder Bryce Bugera narrowly escaped an avalanche while snowboarding at Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia, on Saturday, January 6th, 2024, reports Alanna Kelly for the Prince George Citizen.

The incident occurred as Bugera and his group of friends traversed along the ridgeline, staying inbounds on the mountain. As they waited for the area to clear, Bugera found himself in the path of the avalanche. He was caught in the snow for about 20 feet before he was able to regain his footing.

Recalling the incident to CTV, Bugera described the avalanche as a conveyor belt that constantly tried to knock him off balance. He expressed his gratitude that the group in front of him was not caught in the slide and plans to get a beacon and complete an avalanche skills training course.

Dane Gergovich, senior manager of communications at Whistler Blackcomb, acknowledged the incident and highlighted the importance of safety for guests and staff. He urged people to obey signage, respect others, and ski and ride with care.

Meanwhile, Avalanche Canada is reminding people to be prepared for another round of storms and high avalanche hazard in the backcountry. Forecasters advise limiting hazards and avoiding bigger objectives until the storm snow settles.
