A wildfire broke out on Saturday, September 7 southwest of Reno, Nevada, and has grown rapidly ever since. Officials are now reporting the Davis Fire has grown to 5,596 acres as of 8 a.m. on Tuesday, September 10, an increase from 4,703 acres on Monday morning. Evacuation orders and warnings are still in place for more than 14,000 residents in the surrounding neighborhoods, as at least 14 structures have already been destroyed.
There are over a dozen agencies on the scene, with their first priority being protecting people, property, and critical infrastructure. As the fire approaches Mt Rose Ski Tahoe, the resort had the snow guns running this morning and throughout the day, saturating the ground and trees nearby and doing their part to help protect the resort. Lake Tahoe ski resorts are unfortunately familiar with wildfires, particularly the Caldor Fire in 2021 that ravaged Sierra-at-Tahoe ski area.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, the Davis Fire started in the area of the Davis Creek Regional Park, outside of Washoe City. There have already been major impacts on the region including major interstate and road closures, power outages, and school closings.
With zero containment and high winds expected again on Tuesday, crews will be working tirelessly to prevent the fire from continuing to spread.ย Follow along for more updates on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Facebook page.
