High avalanche danger and a blizzard warning have closed US Highway 550 Red Mountain Pass in Colorado along with many others on Thursday, March 19, 2020. At the time of this writing, there is no estimated time of when the pass will reopen. Also known as ‘The Million Dollar Highway,’ travelers must now take an alternate route from Ouray to Silverton, Colo. through Telluride, turning the 45-minute drive into a four-hour drive, and adding nearly 200 miles to the trip, Out There Colorado reports.
Several other mountain passes in Colorado have closed as well, and a blizzard warning provided by the National Weather Service was in effect until 6:00 am on Friday, March 20. The following highways have been closed due to avalanche mitigation work:
- 12:00 PM: US 6 Loveland Pass
- 3:00 PM: US 40 Berthoud Pass
- 3:00 PM: Eisenhower Tunnel: West Loop Road, I-70 Whistler
The Colorado Department of Transportation is asking people in Colorado to do their part and stay off the roads at this time.
