All eyes were on Wolf Creek, CO this weekend as they were the first resort in North America to open for the upcoming season. A 30″ mid-October storm set them up nicely for their second earliest opening day ever.
The opening day treated eager skiers and riders to a 22โณ base with powder conditions across 3 lifts, 60% of available terrain open totaling 960 acres. Not too shabby for a 100% natural base.
Last year was a disappointing year for the self-titled ‘Snowiest Resort in Colorado’, receivingย less than 200″ of snow. Let’s hope these early season storms, coupled with an El Nino year, are a sign of an awesome season ahead. For now, they will open weekends only, with a full opening projected for 2nd November.
As the month progresses, more and more resorts should begin to open. A-Basin and Loveland, CO, both had tentative opening days penciled in for this upcoming weekend, A-Basin 20th and Loveland 22nd. And Mount Rose Ski Tahoe, NV boosted by huge snowmaking investments, plan on opening on Friday 26th October.
