According to the Utah Avalanche Center, a skier triggered a 1,000ft avalanche inside closed Alta Ski Area, UT on Sunday. Thankfully, no one was injured from the slide. It occurred on Mount Baldy and ran 1,000ft over cliff bands.
The ski area is open to uphill traffic before and after the season, unless the sign at the base of the mountain says otherwise. Throughout the 2017-18 season, there were 0 avalanche fatalities in Utah, which marks the second year in a row. While the season isn’t over, it’s still a huge feat. If you’re venturing into a closed ski area, treat it as the backcountry and take all of the necessary precautions.
