Warner Bros. studios has offered to fund a $100 millionย aerial tramway that would take tourists to and from the Hollywood sign in anย effort to combat traffic, reports Snow Industry News.
โThe Hollywood sign is an important historic and globally recognized landmark for the city of Los Angeles. The signโs fame, however, has created unintended negative effects such as heavy traffic in adjacent residential areas and related safety concerns,โ Warner Bros. said in a statement. โWarner Bros. has developed a proposal forย theย Hollywood Skyway that will reduce street congestion, improve safety and ease neighborhood frustrations. The Skyway will also create a unique, first-class educational experience.โ
The proposed tramway tentatively named the Hollywoodย Skyway, would take six minutes and would transport tourists more than a mile upย Mt. Lee to a new visitorsโ center near the sign, accompanied with a viewingย area. It would start from a parking structure next to Warner Bros.โ lot inย Burbank.ย Under the proposed scheme, which would take about five yearsย to complete, Warner Bros. would share revenue with the city.
Residents living near the famed sign have been complainingย for years about the volume of tourists visiting, which they say has worsenedย with the rise in popularity of photo-sharing social media sites like Instagram,ย ridesharing apps, and GPS systems.
Jon Gilbert, Warner Bros. facilities head, toldย The Losย Angeles Timesย that their proposed structure would minimize the effect onย wildlife at Griffith Park as well as avoid obstructing views of the sign fromย other parts of Los Angeles.
โThis requires a bold solution,โ Gilbert told the Times. โIfย we really want to make a differenceโฆ itโs got to be something compelling.ย Partial solutions are not going to do the trick, and peopleย will continue to inundate the neighborhoods.โ
