Italian ski racer Christof Innerhofer suffered a nasty-looking crash one day after Austria’s Marco Schwarz suffered season-ending injuries. The Italian skier lost his grip after a roller during the Super-G race on Friday, December 29, 2023, and flew at full speed into the B-nets, not without taking out a gate as well on his descent. The crash looked so horrific a helicopter was called to evacuate the ski racer off the course.

”I was unfocussed for a tenth of a second,” Innerhofer said in an interview after the crash, “I was not paying attention for a moment, drove too straight into a turn and it catapulted me out. I had no chance in the air.”

The Stelvio race course in Bormio is notorious for its technical challenges and deep descents. “To hurtle down this course at the age of 39, one has to be mad,” the Italian said about the Stelvio course. Innerhofer was not the only skier who crashed on Friday, a total of 13 skiers recorded the dreaded DNF next to their name, including Innerhofer’s teammates Dominik Paris and Mattia Casse. Americans Wiley Maple and River Radamus also recorded a DNF.

The Super-G event at Bormio, Italy, was won by Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt, while Austrian Raphael Haaser finished in second, and Aleksander Aamodt Kilde from Norway finished in third.
