Stubai Glacier ski resort in the Austrian Alps will open on Friday, September 20th, 2013 with 4” of new snow. That doesn’t sound like enough snow to be opening a ski resort on. Luckily, Stubai Glacier ski resort is on the Stubai glacier and the Stubai glacier is the largest glacier in Austria. To be totally honest, these guys open every year in October, so opening 10 days earlier is not too big a deal for them. They used to be open year round.
The Alps did just get a decent shot of snow down to the 3,600-foot level. Up to 15cms in spots and even more up high.
The Stubai glacier is the largest glacier in Austria at 1,730 acres in area. The highest peak is Stubai peak at 10,961 feet. The ski resort is on top of 5 different large glaciers. Stubai glacier ski resort operated year round until 2003. Since 2003, the ski resort only operates from October until June.
At last! Skiing again! On 20. September 2013 we start into the new ski season.

Um, Stubai is the largest ski resort with a glacier in Austria but not the largest glacier. There’s more on-glacier skiing at Pitztal. (The longest and largest glaciers are Pasterze and Gepatsch). Hintertuxer also has as much/more actual glacier skiing as Stubai.
