Grand Targhee, WY Big Mountain Tele Comp | Day 1 The annual Grand Targhee Big Mountain Telemark competition commenced today with a fabulous foot of fresh powder blanketing the venue with pillow soft landings. It was stunning snow conditions, however, the storm was just getting started leaving the day 1 venue socked into the clouds for much of the day. Regardless of the poor visibility, the competition continued in full blast and tele-wackers […] Bevan Waite | March 1, 2014 1 Comment
Mt Hood Meadows Recent Conditions: Cascade Concrete Below Some Extra Fluff Mt Hood Meadows has been getting slammed with nonstop snow for pretty much the past 4 weeks. There have been fridgid, cold-smoke powder days, but the majority of the snow has been classic warm, heavy, high water content Cascade concrete. This last weekend had hopes of being fabulous with LOTS of snow expected, however, it got a bit too warm for that to come completely true. […] Conditions Report Bevan Waite | February 19, 2014 0 Comments

Weekend Conditions Report: Mt. Hood Meadows Run from the top of Cascade on Saturday, onto the middle ridge above the Mazot, down around the sweater-vest road, and back to the lift. Mt. Hood, and the rest of Oregon for that matter, got hit by a big storm two weekends ago that finally dumped a few feet of new on top of the shallow base we’d been dealing with. That said, […] Conditions Report Bevan Waite | January 21, 2014 0 Comments
Some Avalanche Beacons OFF By Up to 1+ Meters in Deep Burials Recently, We’ve come across an explanation from BeaconReviews.com of how some types of avalanche beacons, during deep burials, could lead you to probe up to a meter or more away from the actual victim. It has to do with signal spikes from the flux lines of the transceiver. “The distance between the strongest signal and the transmitter is based on the orientation of the two transceivers and the depth of the burial […] Avalanche Bevan Waite | January 16, 2014 1 Comment
Mt. Bachelor, OR Conditions Report: January 2nd – 5th It was one icy weekend at Mt. Bachelor, OR. Conditions haven’t changed much since my icy arrival last Wednesday despite the brief hope for a couple new inches Thursday night. It DID snow however, but it was nothing more than a light dusting and was surely not enough to improve any of the off piste conditions. Friday was enjoyable, much like Thursday because the snow on the groomed runs was sugary, soft, and fast. Friday was also much colder with a high around 26 degrees Fahrenheit. This kept the snow from softening up in the afternoon and the groomers stayed […] Conditions Report Bevan Waite | January 7, 2014 1 Comment
Mt. Bachelor, OR Conditions Report| January 2, 2014 Clear skies with wisps of small lenticular clouds dominated the weather yesterday at Mt. Bachelor. The forecast was saying it’d be cloudy by noon and would start snowing at 4pm with an expected 2-4 inches overnight. As AWESOME as this would be for Bachelor which has not gotten snow in a bit, it sadly never became cloudy and definitely did not start snowing. That being said, it was an absolute stunningly beautiful day. The lenticulars augmented the beauty of the vast volcanic landscape and as the day progressed, it warmed up to almost pseudo-spring conditions. Sounds great and all… and it was, for the most part. The one […] Conditions Report Bevan Waite | January 3, 2014 1 Comment
