Big Sky Resort, MT just announced in an email to their pass holders how they plan to operate safely next season in the midst of a global pandemic.
As you would expect, mandatory face-coverings and social distancing measures feature heavily.ย New technology will be implemented to ensure as little contact as possible between people, such as QR for purchasing lift tickets or food.
Big Sky season passholders will not be required to make a reservation, and are welcome to access the resort any day their pass is valid.ย Big Sky Resort WILL be implementing a reservations system for Ikon Pass holders.
Dear Big Sky Skiers and Riders,ย ย
The cooling temperatures and first dustings of snow on Lone Peak are always an exciting time, signaling to us that ski season is just around the corner.ย We have heard from many guests eager to buy passes, liftย tickets,ย andย learn about our winter operations plan. Today,ย weโreย happy to share both with our community.ย ย
Before relaunching season pass and lift ticket salesย today, we felt an obligation to be transparent aboutย 2020-2021 winter operationsย so our guests, both loyal and new, would feel comfortable making winter plans and commitments.ย Big Sky Resort has developed our winter operations plan using ski industry best practicesย and stateย and local health recommendations.ย If thereโs one thing weโve learned in this process, itโs that things can change quickly. The good newsย is,ย a few things wonโtย change:ย skiing will be as fun and exciting as ever.ย ย
Skiing and snowboardingย at Big Sky has alwaysย providedย plenty of room to spread out โ offering more than an acre per skierย on average.ย Our immense 5,850ย acres ofย skiableย terrain, plus lift infrastructure thatย moves guests upย and acrossย the mountainย quickly, makesย the experienceย on our mountain a relatively low-risk outdoor activity.ย Itย is our goal toย provideย a safe experienceย to our guests, even if some activitiesย have toย be scaled back or put on hold.ย That said,ย weโreย excited to share ourย currentย plan with you, and with teamwork, we aspire toย provideย a reasonable solution for the safest experience possible.ย ย
Winter Lift Access
Weโreย thrilled to have season passes and lift tickets back on sale today. We appreciate everyoneโs patience as weย pausedย sales this summerย to plan for safe and responsible operations.ย ย
At this time, it is not our intention to limit access to the mountain. However, we may need to take some measures to maintain a safe and responsible experience for our guests by managing skier volume. Hereโs what we are committed to sharing today:ย
-
- Big Sky Season Passholdersย are welcome to access the resort any day of the seasonย theirย pass is valid, at any timeย during operating hours, and walk up to theย liftsย as usual.ย Season Passes are back on sale today for a limited time. Sales may be paused at a future date to continue assessing the number of skiers we can accommodate on the mountain. We hope that byย monitoringย the number of passes sold, we will avoid implementing a reservation system during the season.ย Every season passย purchase includesย Worry-Free Winter Assurance, whichย providesย a credit towards a 2021-22 season pass based on the number of days lost if the resort were to close due to unforeseen circumstances andย operateย fewer than 140 days. Passholders also have theย optionย to roll over the value of an unused 2020-21 pass as a credit towards a 2021-22 pass for any reason through December 10, 2020, at no cost.ย ย
- Ikon Passholdersย can ski when their passesย permitย access andย mustย useย Ikonโsย reservation system to let us know when they plan to visit. If we need to address volume, there may be a limit on how many Ikonย passholders can access the mountain during specific days of the season.ย
- Mountain Collective Passholdersย willย alsoย have access to Big Sky Resort when their passesย permitย access.ย Mountain Collective passholders may be required to make a reservation before their visit. More details are forthcoming. If we need to address volume, there may be a limit on how many Mountain Collective passholders can access the mountain during specific days of the season.ย
- Lift Ticket holdersย canย purchaseย their desired days of skiing at this time, with noย anticipatedย restrictions. Purchasing your lift tickets online, andย beforeย the start of the seasonย willย assureย accessย toย the mountain for yourย desiredย days of skiing. If we need to address volume,ย availability for lift tickets onย desiredย dates may be restricted for both online andย same-day lift ticketย sales.ย Please note,ย same-dayย lift ticket sales may be restricted at any time,ย soย we highly recommend securing your winter lift accessย now.ย ย
Physical Distancing on the Mountain
We are confident that chairlifts are a safe way to disperse guests throughout Bigย Skyโsย massive 5,850 acres of skiing. Big Skyโsย average chairlift ride is 5.5 minutes,ย considerably shorterย than mostย modes ofย transportationย such as riding a bus. Chairlifts provide constantย directionalย airflow, with chairs spacedย approximately 50ย feet apart, and with a limited period ofย close contactย between individuals.ย
All lifts, carpets, and the Lone Peakย Tramย will run as plannedย this winter, asย snow and conditionsย permit.ย Facialย coveringsย will beย mandatoryย for all guestsย whileย in lift queues,ย loading, riding, andย unloadingย lifts.ย ย Wearing a facial covering inย lift queuesย and on lifts is the most important factor in our ability to transport guests up the mountain efficiently this winter.ย Mazes and lift queues willย be set up toย facilitateย physical distancing,ย with singles lines no longer offered this season.ย ย
We will not be enforcing maximumย capacityย onย chairlifts andย will allow groups traveling together to ride on their own chairย when operationallyย feasible.ย Some exceptions may be made for higher-capacity lifts such asย Ramchargerย 8 and the Lone Peak Tram, where more than one unrelated partyย is expected toย ride together withย constantย airflow,ย facial coverings, and limitedย contact duringย each four-minute ride.ย Capacity in the Lone Peakย Tramย mayย vary toย balanceย uphill capacityย with aย safeย and reasonableย guest experience.ย A newย boot packย routeย is beingย considered,ย beginningย fromย the top ofย Dakota liftย to the Yeti Traverse,ย providingย additionalย access to Lone Peak terrain.ย ย
Food & Beverage
We have reconfigured on-mountain and village dining establishments to allow more space for social distancing.ย Grab-and-go and takeout options will be available at each restaurant, with online ordering capabilitiesย for select locations to provideย guestsย an alternativeย method of ordering and minimize time indoors. The Yellowstone Conference Center,ย anย 8,000 square foot indoorย space, willย be open to the public to provideย additional seating and roomย for dining and warming up this winter.ย ย ย
Mountain Sports School
Mountain Sports School will be offered this winter withย updatedย program availability, streamlinedย check-in andย instructorย meetingย locations, and the opportunity to complete required paperworkย beforeย arrival online.ย Private Lessons and Mountain Guides willย be available and bookable online, allowingย groups that travel togetherย to skiย together.ย Booking a lesson or guide with Mountain Sports School will guarantee the ability toย purchaseย a lift ticket on the day of your session.ย We intendย to offerย local youth programs and group lessons, withย availabilityย andย additionalย informationย toย beย sharedย at a later date.ย ย ย
New: Early Access
Early Access, a new unguided first tracks program, will allow guests to loadย Ramchargerย 8ย at 8ย a.m.,ย one hour before public access,ย to get a head start on the ski dayย while providing an additional opportunityย for guestsย toย disperse throughout the mountain, alleviating base area congestion in the mornings.ย Bothย liftย ticketย and Season Passholdersย will have the ability to purchase Early Accessย from mid-December toย March, andย must be booked online in advance.ย Aย limitedย amount ofย Early Access reservationsย will beย permitted each day, so be sure to book earlyย when onlineย purchasing becomes available.ย
Our lodging, retail, and rental facilities will remain open this winter, operating in accordance with local health department best practices. We also expect the Lone Peak Playhouse, Big Skyโs childcare facility, to open with enhanced safety protocols.ย
Even withย reduced capacity on and off the mountain,ย we acknowledge the inherent risk of COVID-19 transmission in enclosed spaces.ย While we do our part, weย are also asking our community to do their part and use good judgement toย beย sociallyย distantย whenever possible.ย We intend toย use common sense and good practices to open safely and efficiently for the full duration of our ski season. Like last winter, we are not afraid to pivot or make hard choicesย once the season is underway; but remain confidentย that ourย currentย plan willย allow us to have aย fullย seasonย of skiing.ย ย
For more detail about our winter operations plan, please refer to our Winter Operations FAQ page.ย ย
We couldnโt be more excited to welcome skiers to the mountain this Thanksgiving.ย Weย lookย forward to a safe, healthy season back on snow,ย enjoying the sport that brings our community together.
See you on the mountain,ย ย
