A slight dusting of snow fell at the top of 12,579โ€™ Peak 6 at Breckenridge, CO, on August 12th, 2023. Breckenridgeโ€™s Instagram reported that โ€œ[the] eveningโ€™s storm brought…a little dust on crust (and by crust we mean rock)!โ€ The storm also created a beautiful rainbow over the town.

Breckenridge plans to open on November 10th this year, meaning skiers are about 80 days away from the start of the next seasonโ€”thatโ€™s just 11 Fridays. The resort opened two days early last season due to some early-season snow. However, weโ€™ll have to wait and see what Mother Nature has in store this winter. Vail also recently announced opening dates for its other major resorts nationwide. Breckenridgeโ€™s neighbor Keystone plans to open in mid-October if conditions permit; meanwhile, Vailโ€™s main California resorts expect to open before Thanksgiving. Vail Resorts expects all of its Western resorts to open by December 1st.

Breckenridge isnโ€™t alone with August snow in North America.ย In California, the High Sierras received some rare August snow from Tropical Storm Hillary. Counterintuitive to its tropical origins, the storm dropped around 1-8โ€ of snow along the crest, with the summits getting up to 12โ€. Meanwhile, in Idaho, Pomerelle Mountain Resort recorded its first snowfall of the season. The resortโ€™s Facebook reported a light dusting of snow at 1:30 AM Monday, making it one of the first resorts to see snowfall this season. Itโ€™s only a few months before winter is in full swing again, and weโ€™ll hopefully get back on the slopes soon!
