James Dick, a 50-year-old father of two, is attempting to break the Guinness World Record by skiing in 30 countries in 28 days. Having already skied in 20 countries, including Germany, Italy, Norway, and Iceland, after hitting eight countries in the first three days of his challenge, he aims to conquer 10 more, wrapping up in Inverness, Scotland, on January 28, according to NewsChain Online.

While awaiting confirmation, Dick, who is originally from Romford in East London, is hopeful about surpassing the current record of 17 countries in 21 days. The challenge also serves as a fundraiser, exceeding £10,000 ($12,600) for charities such as the National Brain Appeal and Saint Francis Hospice, according to NewsChain Online.

Dick is an avid skier, and he acknowledges the intensity of the endeavor, navigating challenges such as variable snow conditions, travel logistics, and fatigue from all the skiing and traveling. Despite the hurdles, Dick plans to complete 10 countries in 11 days, using Istanbul as his base.

The experiences on his journey to break the world record for the most countries skied in 28 days has been surreal for Dick, who was in Iceland on Sunday at the time of the most recent volcanic eruption near the town of Grindavik in the south-west region of the country, as he told PA Media, the National news agency of the UK and Ireland. Because of instances like this, he mentions how he’s had to act swiftly to avoid disruptions in his schedule. His remaining itinerary includes Bulgaria, Greece, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Croatia, Romania, and Bosnia before concluding the journey in Scotland, where he expects to ski on the final day of the project.
