A 50-year-old British man has fallen 100 feet to his death died while snowboarding in Avoriaz in the French Alps. The man was on vacation with his family but was alone at the time of the accident, having left his wife and child on the marked pistes.

According to initial investigations, he was snowboarding off-piste in an area called Pointe de la Chaux Fleurie in Montriond. He fell 100 feet from a rocky ledge. Mountain rescue was alerted just before midday.

“The man was with his family on holiday. He was in an off-piste area when he fell 30 meters. A witness alerted mountain rescuers at around midday, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. An inquiry has been opened into his death,” said a spokesman.
