One of Russia’s leading freeskiers and skaters passed away unexpectedly on 11th August at the age of 29.

Newschoolers broke the news on Wednesday that Dima “Makro” Makrushin, at the forefront of newschool skiing in Russia, had tragically passed. It is still unknown how he died.

On the morning of August 11, 2021, at the age of 29, our friend and colleague Dima “Makro” Makrushin passed away. He represented Russia on the world stage of aggressive roller skating and new-school skiing, was the greatest master of his craft. For almost 20 years in the culture of action sports, Dima has released countless video games and edits, his work was highly regarded by colleagues around the world for his incredible style and attention to the smallest details both in the skating itself and in its presentation.

Dima was a famous person, but he never aspired to fame or publicity, this was not his goal. He was a man of fine mental organization and did not open his soul to strangers. Those who knew Dima personally and had the good fortune to have an intimate conversation with him noted his goodwill, ability to listen and the ability to sincerely empathize with the interlocutor – rare qualities that few people can boast of in our time.

Dima treated life philosophically, never rushed anywhere, always carefully weighed all the pros and cons. If he did something, he gave all the best. Working with him on the set has always been incredibly interesting and effective, but at the same time easy and natural. I would also like to note his sense of humor: even in the most difficult troubles, he never lost his optimism and believed in the best outcome, endowing this energy with everyone who was around. His sincere, real smile disarmed even the most serious characters, and it was almost impossible to see Dima in anger, unless, of course, this was a tirade against the next rail that he was about to slip.

You can write endlessly, there won’t be enough words anyway. The death of Dima is an irreparable loss for his family, for close friends from his beloved and always praised Medvedkovo district, for the entire action sports community and for the world as a whole. Sincere condolences to everyone who is fortunate enough to be familiar with this brightest man. Eternal memory to you, Macro. Ride steezy in peace!

P.S.
The civil funeral service will be held on 08/14/2021 in the Khovansky crematorium. The time will be known later.

Our dear friend Dima “Makro” Makrushin passed away on the morning of August 11, 2021.

– Obituary left by @twoowtskis on Instagram, translated from Russian by Google

Tributes have been shared online since @twoowtskis posted an obituary in Russian to Instagram.

Dima had been making and sharing skate and ski edits on Vimeo since he was 16-years old.

Freeskiing, or new school skiing is a specific type of alpine skiing, which involves tricks, jumps, and terrain park features, such as rails, boxes, jibs, or other obstacles. This form of skiing resulted from the growth of snowboarding combined with the progression of freestyle skiing. “Newschoolers”, or those who specifically ski in this style, as opposed to traditional freestylers, freeriders, big mountain skiers, and racers, are often found in terrain parks, which are designed specifically for tricks.

Controversially, freestyle skiing is viewed as its own sport, but some view it as a subset of freeskiing. Some participants view it as a separate sport and do not refer to it as freestyle. The sport does not require participants to compete, but there are competitive events available at every level of the sport. Currently there are two Olympic freeskiing events, half-pipe skiing and slopestyle. These events make up two of the four Olympic freestyle skiingevents.
