American-born Eileen Gu won gold yesterday at the Beijing 2022 Winter Games โ€” becoming the first woman to win the Olympicsโ€™ inaugural freeski big air event.

Gu, 18, who grew up in San Francisco, CA, chose to represent China in 2019 as her mother is from China.

Going into her final jump, Gu was trailing Franceโ€™s Tess Ledeux. She nailed a double cork 1620 jump, two distinct off-axis rotations in the air, a trick sheโ€™d never tried in competition before, giving her the gold medal.

“I was guaranteed a podium spot when I dropped in. I was thinking, ‘Should I improve on my previous one and go for the silver or should I whip out this random trick I’d never done before and go for gold?'”

Judges scored 94.50 for her last run, which took her past Ledux for a total score of 188.25.

Tuesday was the first of Guโ€™s disciplines in Beijing, where she is expected to be competing for gold medals.
