The New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (‘Olympic Authority’) announces the grand opening of The Notch at Whiteface Mountain, New York on December 9, 2023. The Notch is the new quad-chair at Whiteface Mountain which was the biggest, most transformative project of the summer at the resort. The new Notch chair lift is a detachable quad lift that takes guests from the Bear Den Learning Center to a point just beyond the Legacy Lodge at mid-station. This innovative lift — the only one of its kind in the East — will dramatically improve the skier experience. The lift is actually two lifts in one that together operate seamlessly.

The Notch quad chair will help skiers and riders at the Bear Den Learning Center access additional beginner and intermediate terrain while also providing access to upper mountain lifts and advanced terrain. Riders can unload onto the Boreen trail or continue farther upward where they can access other trails and lifts as well as the Legacy Lodge. In this way, The Notch will help everyone experience all that Whiteface has to offer while also reducing traffic on other lifts and trails.

When: 9:00 am, Saturday, December 9, 2023, grand opening with ribbon cutting and remarks.

Where: The base of The Notch at the Bear Den Learning Center, Whiteface Mountain. Media and guests are asked to arrive by 8:45 am at the base of The Notch.

Whiteface Mountain is located 13 miles from Lake Placid and has a top elevation of 4,867 feet, making it the fifth-highest mountain in New York state. The summit offers a 360-degree view of the Adirondacks and on good days you can see all the way to Vermont and even Canada. Whiteface boasts the greatest vertical drop of over 3,600 feet east of the Rockies and hosted the alpine skiingcompetitions of the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid. The Olympic Authority was created by the State of New York in 1982 to manage the facilities used during the 1980 Winter Games, such as Whiteface, Belleayre, and Gore Mountains, Mt Van Hoevenberg, the James C. Sheffield Speed Skating Oval, the Olympic Jumping Complex, and the Olympic Center.
