Brought to you by Grand Targhee
Report from Saturday & Sunday, January 2nd & 3rd, 2021
It’s been a bit of a mixed-bag funhouse at Grand Targhee Resort, but forecast models were good–and they delivered.
Targhee has seen 15 inches of new snow spread across the past 48hrs with a healthy second helping predicted to be on the horizon.
Snow quality has been of the medium-density variety; cushion-y, stacking nicely, and staying put. That’s not to say the wind hasn’t played a factor. It’s bumped heavy herds of fatty cloud up and down the west side of the Tetons and Grand Targhee Resort. Where those clouds have been hangin’, it’s been hard to see, but the snow that they’ve brought is welcome.
Sunday, particularly, was the day for patchy viz accompanied by snowfall of fluctuating intensity. Wise play here was to pick the spots, session ’em well, and have a plan in place for a space to de-kit and/or get warm. (Such a strategy eases the navigation holiday crowds within on-mountain facilities operating under Targhee’s Winter Plan.)
The front-facing terrain in-between trails, Wild Willie and Crazy Horse, hid excellent skiing through a re-coated snowpack, and wind effect kept happily depositing fresh dashes of the white stuff among the Targhee trees–which made for handy viz markers as well.
All-in-all, the last couple of days at Grand Targhee Resort have been a zesty slash in a winter shower, but the forecast says there’s even better yet to come.

By-the-way, very Happy New Year to everyone near or far. It was a great evening at Targhee, featuring a traditional torchlight parade and fireworks.
