Highway 1 along Big Sur in California will reopen on April 30th, almost two months ahead of schedule, Caltrans announced yesterday.

Great news: Highway 1 at Rat Creek south of Big Sur will open to traffic by Friday, April 30, two months ahead of schedule due to favorable weather and soil conditions. Thanks for your patience and cooperation, big kudos to our crews/contractor for a safe and speedy rebuild.

A stretch of Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast in Monterey County washed away January 28th after being hit by debris flow off a hillside following heavy rains.

That portion of the scenic road had already been closed as part of a 44-mile closure due to the county’s evacuation order ahead of the rain.
