Mammoth ski resort in Californiaย just received 23″ of new snow in the past week and extended their season until Memorial Day, May 25th.
The most recent snow came this past Thursday night and freshened things up to the tune of 5″ of new snow. ย That new snow wasn’t quite enough to make things bottomless, but it was enough to make Saturday great. ย Saturday was the first time it got warm after the new snow on Thursday and that warmth made the skiing fun.
On Saturday, the sun came out and the off-piste skiing from Chair 23 was soft and malleable. ย Wipe Out, skiers left of Chair 23, was our favorite. ย Wipe Out was chaulky-ish and great up top, then soft and hot pow-y down low. ย As the sun got stronger during the day, the snow softened up and the skiing got better. ย We skied hard from 9 until we couldn’t take it anymore.
On Sunday, cloudy skies and snowย kept theย snow pretty firm until about noon. ย We had some hard drivingย graupel snow for a while that was wild. ย The runs off Chair 23 never quite softened up, but they did groom the upper mountain groomer for the first time since the snowfall on Thursday. ย Chair 3 was skiing well and even the groomer down to Chair 1 was fun. ย You could ski off-piste off Chair 3 after noon and the bumps were good.
The bizarre stormy spring weather will continue during the final week of operations at Mammoth which should keep things cool, not sticky, and fun.
Mammoth will be open for one more week until May 25th. ย This coming Memorial day will be the 28th year in a row that Mammoth has been open until at least Memorial Day. ย

Please, no glass bottles while chilling near rivers/hot springs/creeks/etc. Too many good beers in cans these days. Obviously nobody goes out expecting to break a beer bottle, but when it does happen accidentally, it’s long lasting, hard to clean up completely, bummer.
Keep up the great reports. Glad to see people still after it in California.
