On Tuesday, May 21, a 40-year-old man was attacked by a black bear while on a morning walk near Steamboat Springs Ski Resort, Colorado. The victim reports that he was swiped from behind and knocked to the ground around 9:45 a.m. while walking on a path from Walton Creek Road to Mount Werner Circle. The man reports having noticed a yearling cub on the path before being attacked. The victim sustained minor injuries to his arm. He was able to finish the walk before receiving first aid.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Officers set up bear traps and placed warning signs along the path and were able to capture the mother bear and her two of her three yearling cubs on Wednesday afternoon. CPW confirmed on Thursday, May 22, that the mother bear was humanely euthanized as per the department’s policy. Officers confirm that after examination of the cubs it was determined that the yearling cubs were old enough to survive on their own and were relocated to southern Routt County. CPW will not attempt to capture the third yearling and the traps have been removed.
