Mount Baker Ski Area in Washington has announced an early opening for its 2024-25 winter season. The legendary resort, known for its record-breaking snowfall, will welcome season pass holders on Wednesday, November 20, followed by a grand opening to the general public on Thursday, November 21.

This early season opener is a welcome surprise, especially considering last year’s challenging conditions. The 2023-24 season saw Mount Baker struggling with low snow levels and frequent rain, forcing a delayed start in mid-December. But Mother Nature seems to be making amends this year, dumping a hefty amount of the white stuff on the slopes in recent storms.

As of the announcement, the Heather Meadows base area boasts an impressive snow base of nearly five feet, with Pan Dome reporting a whopping 65 inches.

The resort plans to open the Heather Meadows base area first, with Chairs 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 spinning on opening day. The Raven Hut Lodge will also be open for those needing a break from the slopes. Depending on conditions, the Shuksan side of the terrain might open as early as Wednesday, with both base areas potentially operational by the weekend.

While the mountain crew tirelessly prepares for opening day, skiers and snowboarders are reminded to respect closed areas and avoid tampering with equipment.

This early start bodes well for Mount Baker, which holds the world record for snowfall in a single season (a mind-boggling 1,140 inches in 1998-99). With long-range forecasts hinting at a La Niรฑa pattern this winter, powder lovers might be in for a treat. La Niรฑa typically brings cold, wet weather to the Pacific Northwest, often translating to epic snow conditions.
