Revitalized and expanded adaptive facility to break ground spring 2022

The National Ability Center (NAC), a leading non-profit organization that provides world-class adaptive recreation and outdoor adventures for individuals and families with disabilities, and longtime partner Vail Resorts announce the next phase of the National Ability Centerโ€™s McGrath Family Mountain Center project at Park City Mountain. The National Ability Center has received approval from Vail Resorts to proceed with construction on the long-awaited McGrath Family Mountain Center, which will sit slopeside at the base of Park City Mountain, thanks to a generous and historic 50-year land lease with the resort. NAC will break ground this spring and expects to finish the new 9,400 square foot facility in May 2023. Exact timing will be subject to city approvals.

โ€œOver 37 years ago, our programs began on the slopes of Park City Mountain. Todayโ€™s news represents a monumental step forward for not only the NAC, but the adaptive nation at large. As part of our multi-phased Capital Campaign that launched in 2015, and our continued partnership with Vail Resorts, the new McGrath Family Mountain Center will benefit thousands of individuals and families in need of adaptive recreation and adventure programs, including those with PTSD, limb loss, autism, visual impairment and more. This project is only possible thanks to the unwavering support from the teams at Vail Resorts, Park City Mountain and the town of Park City. We are beyond excited to wrap up 23 successful years in the existing double wide trailer and look forward to breaking ground in the coming months.โ€

–ย Danny Glasser, CEO of the National Ability Center

The ADA accessible facility will provide a home base for the organizationโ€™s adaptive ski and snowboard programs and will provide:

  • The ability to serve significantly more people with disabilities in NACโ€™s ski and snowboard programs.
  • Adequate indoor space to properly fit participants in mono and bi-skis. Once fitted, participants will slide on an artificial surface directly to the snow!
  • Storage space for specialized adaptive ski equipment.
  • Locker rooms for instructors as well as separate locker rooms for adaptive competitive athletes.
  • Reception area, instructor kitchen, office, uniform storage room with laundry facilities, specialized sensory room for calming and multi-purpose rooms for training and education.
  • Restroom facilities on-site for NAC participants and their families: a major upgrade from the current reliance on public restrooms, which are a short walk from the existing center.

โ€œWe are proud to be a long-time partner of the National Ability Center and are thrilled to support the construction of the McGrath Family Mountain Center at the base of Park City Mountain. The NAC has been providing incredible services to the Park City and visiting community for nearly four decades and the construction of the McGrath Family Mountain Center will enable them to expand their world-class adaptive ski and snowboard programs for years to come. Weโ€™re excited to see the new center come to life at the base of the resort as the NAC continues to empower individuals of all ages and abilities with life changing programming.โ€
