Day one of the 50th Anniversary of the National Brotherhood of Skiers kicked off February 4th in Vail, Colorado. The event was a massive welcome party held at The Hythe in the Grand Ballroom. This event marks five decades of the organization’s Black Summit week, which brings in more than 1,300 Black skiers, snowboarders, and mountain enthusiasts from around the country. Black Summit week is known for its ski and snowboard competitions, festive apres ski parties, and fundraising for minority ski organizations. SnowBrains was on the scene checking into the event, and here is what went down.
Food, music, cocktails, event registration, fun; social gathering galore.ย The welcome party was held in the Grand Ballroom at The Hythe hotel, one of the nicest hotels in Vail. The event had tons of food ranging from crudites and other appetizer spreads to artisanal flatbread pizzas. The scene was a total party; cocktails were poured while dancers gathered around one of the best DJ sets I have seen in a hotel. The event sign-up line wrapped around the outside of the ballroom. People were gingerly hopping over to friends, shaking hands, laughing, and hugging each other. Everyone was excited to be with each other in the mountains.

Ben Finley, the co-founder of the NBS, describes the organization’s organic growth the best.ย
โNone of it was planned,โ Finley said. โI describe the development of this organization like packing a little snowball at the top of the hill and starting it down the run, and it gets bigger and bigger as it goes until you say โOh sโ, look at what we ended up with.โโย – Vail Dailyย
