NOAA has issued an avalanche warning for the Lake Tahoe area.ย The Sierra Avalanche Centerย has rated the current avalanche danger as high above tree line in Lake Tahoe.

URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED AVALANCHE WARNING U.S. FOREST SERVICE SIERRA AVALANCHE CENTER RELAYED BY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RENO NV 624 AM PST SUN FEB 9 2014 THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE IS TRANSMITTED AT THE REQUEST OF THE U.S. FOREST SERVICE SIERRA AVALANCHE CENTER. ...AN AVALANCHE WARNING IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7AM PST MONDAY... THE CURRENT AVALANCHE DANGER IS HIGH. NEAR TREELINE AND ABOVE TREELINE, AVALANCHE DANGER IS HIGH ON NW- N-NE-E-SE ASPECTS ON SLOPES 32 DEGREES AND STEEPER. FOR ALL OTHER AREAS, AVALANCHE DANGER IS CONSIDERABLE ON SLOPES 32 DEGREES AND STEEPER. WIND SLAB, STORM SLAB, AND DEEP PERSISTENT SLAB AVALANCHES ARE ALL POSSIBLE TODAY. THIS WARNING WAS POSTED AT 620 AM SUNDAY AND COVERS THE SIERRA NEVADA MOUNTAINS BETWEEN YUBA PASS ON THE NORTH AND EBBETTS PASS ON THE SOUTH. THIS WARNING APPLIES ONLY TO BACKCOUNTRY AREAS OUTSIDE OF ESTABLISHED SKI AREA BOUNDARIES.
