What are you doing at 3am? Probably not BASE jumping from the top of the Freedom Tower in New York City! Four men BASE Jumped off the tower in September 2013 (East Coasters, note the lack of snow). New York Police Department has arrested the four men, James Brady, Kyle Hartwell, Marko Markovich, and Andrew Rossig.
The Freedom Tower is still under construction, and recently a 16-year old boy was arrested after he climbed to the top of the tower where (kids will be kids) he hung out for two hours and posted instagram photos. The BASE jumpers accessed the tower in a similar manner; through a gap in the construction fence surrounding the tower. The Freedom Tower will be the tallest tower in the U.S. when construction is finished. For a tower that the New York City mayor described as the #1 terrorist target, it seems like security has been surprisingly lacking.
On the 5th Anniversary of Shane McConkey’s death, this is almost a perfect way of commemorating him. There is no doubt that Shane would approve of this unsanctioned BASE Jump!
