Report from February 1, 2023

Today was a sneaker powder day at Palisades Tahoe, CA with no one around…

Palisades reported 4″ of new snow on the upper mountain and 0″ at the bottom.

Honestly, I wasn’t too inspired by the report, but I rolled outta bed and got to the hill by 8:45 a.m.

Noah said the Funitel was the way to go so I followed.

He was right.

I chased him and Alex to Shirley Lake but was a bit behind.

I then bumped over to Solitude (which I haven’t ridden in years) and had the place to myself.

Well, myself and about six others.

I skied lap after lap after lap of untracked, low-angle powder and loved it.

I even found a couple of fun airs but mostly landed on rocks when I jumped…

I’d been keeping my eye on Granite Chief and at 10:45 a.m. I went over to investigate.

Folks were starting to line up so I did too.

It was fun, but it wasn’t as good as Solitude.

The key to today was lower angle untouched powder because anything deep had you hitting the firm snow beneath.

It was kind of a deep dust on crust powder day unless you found lower-angle snow where you didn’t hit bottom and it was 4-6″ deep and fun.

It’s always more fun when conditions exceed expectations and that’s exactly what today did.

Thanks, California!
