Meta Platforms, Inc. CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is building an impressive real estate portfolio. Already one of the richest people in the world, he owns 1,200 acres of real estate in San Francisco, Palo Alto, Hawaii, and now Lake Tahoe.
His interests in Lake Tahoe started in December 2018 and January 2019 when a week apart he purchased two neighboring estates on the west shore of the lake for a total of $59 million. The first property was the 3.5-acre Carousel Estate owned by the family of the late investment banker Robert Quist. The second property, called the Brushwood Estate, was known for hosting the annual high society Oscar de la Renta fashion show. Combined, the properties gave Zuckerberg 10 acres and 600 feet of prime lakefront shoreline.
Now Zuckerberg’s intentions for the properties have been obtained via planning documents by SFGATE and reveal the ambitious plans to construct a seven-building compound. Construction is already underway as two of the current buildings have been demolished. This is surprising because near-century-old mansions are typically protected due to their historic status. However, local officials and environmental regulatory agencies gave the approval due to the structures having undergone a series of additions and modifications over time which significantly reduced their historic integrity.
Aerial images now show a construction site with machinery and exposed earth where the buildings have been torn down. Also, from the lake, white plastic construction tape can be seen wrapped around a structure.
Details of the plans include the largest main residence building being 20,000 square feet and 35 feet tall. Renderings show it will be L-shaped with an expansive timber and glass facade, topped with a shingle roof that will be partially visible from the lake. Other buildings that have been approved are a bunkhouse, a gym, a gatehouse, an office, and a guesthouse. The landscaping plans include mulch trails, bridges, fire pits stone walkways, and numerous bear boxes. Overall, the buildings will account for 75,000 square feet.
These plans underscore Zuckerberg’s investment in both real estate and personal retreats, providing a serene getaway from his high-profile life in the tech industry. The property serves as a testament to his success and his desire for a balanced lifestyle amidst the natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
