Report from Saturday, February 10, 2024

Halfway up the steep hill, touring faster than I probably ever have and wearing a Yoshi costume, I wondered to myself:

“Why the hell did I agree to do this?!”

Our team got fifth in Powder Mountain’s brand new Lightning Ridge Relay race that took place on Saturday and the three of us were pretty happy about that.

The event consisted of a skin up to Pow Mow’s famous Lightning Ridge, a race through gates down Weber Bowl, and a return to the Lightning Ridge cat pick-up, where teams of three passed the baton.

Everyone was wearing costumes and some were downright hilarious.

The climb up was steep and demanding.

The ski down was fast and exciting—and it was in ungroomed powder!

Whoever’s idea it was to position a slalom race down a powder run is a genius.

The final push on the cat track back to the shack was brutal and tested everyone’s strength.

A team of three men in Canadian tuxedos with sleeves cut off and jean shorts took the crown of $600 and a fresh set of K2 skis.

Then the Uinta boys showed up with a cooler full of free, seasonal beer.

Everyone had a good time.

After that, we skied the Powder Country and found soft, slightly sun-affected powder down mostly untouched slopes.

It was cold and snowing fat flakes while the sun was shining brightly.

An enigma, we thought.

After Powder Country, we boarded the bus and skied over to Paradise where the powder was downright perfect.

We lapped the cliffs under the liftline before going over to the other side of the mountain to ski Sanctuary.

The still, protected powder lying between the Aspen trees was creamy as ever.

The fresh turns were plentiful.

It was all well deserved after the Lightning Ridge Relay.

I forgot how fun on-mountain competitions were, especially when you are part of one.

To do that with friends at a place like Powder Mountain—that’s even better.
