According to Gripped, Wittek was alone in his tent at 19,356-feet when the avalanche struck. The other five members of the team were able to get away. One of the team managers managed to activate an SOS distress beacon on Sunday. A rescue team has been sent, but it’s been three days since the avalanche. Helicopters have not been able to search due to poor weather.
The other climbers are waiting to return home. Wittek received his Ph.D. in computer science from the National University of Singapore and has an MSc in Mathematics.
