Report from January 24, 2023

Yesterday World Cup ski racer Steven Nyman invited me to go ski at his home resort of Sundance, UT.

I’d been wanting to ski Sundance for years.

We jumped in his big truck and rumbled around the backside of the Wasatch Mountains and into the tight canyon leading up to Sundance.

Before we even rolled into the parking lot, a wild turkey crossed the road.

I was excited and could tell Steven wasn’t surprised.

This is turkey country.

We took two lifts to the top of the mountain with Steven pointing things out and telling stories all the while.

Steven grew up on this mountain with his two brothers.

All they did was ski.

Robert Redford owned Sundance when he grew up here and his mom taught Denzel Washington and other famous people to ski.

We ran into Steven’s dad and we all bombed around the resort together.

The terrain is legit.

Steep, treed ridge noses that funnel into tight canyons.

Steep shots everywhere.

This place would be wildly fun on a powder day.

We mostly ski off-piste on places like “Hill’s Headwall” and it was a hoot watching Steven revel in his old stomping grounds and navigate all of it with ease.

I was just barely hanging on…

Steven was charging through everything.

It was all I could do to keep up.

Run after run after run of fun, high speed, darting skiing.

It’s always impressive to watch Steven ski and very hard to keep up with him.

The snow was a mix of everything with perfect groomers, fun tree chowder, sun-kissed powder, and a bit of chunder.

We ended the day with a quick tour of the rustic yet fancy base area that is haunted by four turkeys who seem to own the place.

I was blown away by Sundance and can’t wait to get back here.

With all the hustle and bustle of Park City and the Cottonwood Canyons, it’s obvious that Sundance is a diamond in the rough just waiting to be discovered.

No lines, no traffic, easy parking, plenty of snow, and great skiing.

Thanks, Utah!
