VIDEO: What Itโ€™s Like to Get Caught in an Avalanche

This post is mostly a friendly reminder that as skiers and riders, we need to keep avalanches on the forefront of our minds. This is a great time of year to start planning on when youโ€™ll be taking your next avalanche classes in 2015/16. If youโ€™ve never taken an avalanche class, we highly recommend taking your Avy 1, even if you never go out of bounds. Avalanches happen in bounds every year and as a skier or rider, you should know how to respond.

VIDEO: What Does & Does Not Cause Avalanches

This is a fun, lighthearted tutorial about what does and does not cause an avalanche. We know, this is not a lighthearted topic, but there is good information in here. If you arenโ€™t familiar with how avalanches work, this is a great, quick rundown of what can lead up to an avalanche. If you know everything about avalanches (no one does), there are still some interesting informational sound bites in there. [โ€ฆ]

VIDEO: โ€œAvalanche From Hellโ€

avalanche from hell

This avalanche is from way back when on Mt. Ruapehu, New Zealand. This is a ridiculously enormous class 5 avalanche with the capacity to take out a village. There is a ski resort on this mountain just out of view to the lookerโ€™s left in this video. Ruapehu is a very sacred mountain to the Mauri people and one of the worldโ€™s most active volcanoes. Itโ€™s the largest active volcano in New Zealand at 9,177-feet above sea level. [โ€ฆ]

This video gives us a little background on the avalanche and how it was triggered and shows us how it all looks from the helicopterโ€™s perspective. [โ€ฆ]

Skier Buried in Avalanche in Little Cottonwood Canyon, UT Yesterday | Video, Photos, Report

A female skier was completely buried by an avalanche that she triggered in Grizzly Gulch in the Alta Backcountry in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah yesterday. The person she was with was taking photos of her and he did not have a beacon, probe, nor shovel. The buried skier was AMAZINGLY LUCKY that an avalanche forecaster and friends were nearby and saw the incident occur. They sped to the scene and were able to have back to the surface in 5 minutes. If not for this very timely and lucky rescue, she would not be alive. [โ€ฆ]

Powder Magazine Calls โ€œBullSh*tโ€ on Avalanche Video

Last week, we published a video of a freeskier getting trapped in a large avalanche. The whole video was an ABS avalanche airbag backpack advertisement, literally. The video shows Aymar Navarro getting caught in a huge avalanche in the Spanish Pyrenees. Itโ€™s certainly a large scary avalanche and Aymar is lucky to have survived. โ€œThere is another video where Aymar describes the incident, saying that the sun broke through after a week of storms and 12 feet of new snow, with another foot of fresh overnight. He says they evaluated three slopes and tried to [โ€ฆ]
